Center attorney Robert F. Bensing died on February 3, 1998, from injuries sustained in a traffic accident on his way home from visiting prisoners in South Georgia. He had just obtained compensation for prisoners who had been abused and beaten during "shakedowns" at the prisons led by then-Commissioner of Corrections Wayne Garner.
