The Southern Center for Human Rights is a small, nonprofit organization dedicated to
protecting the human and civil rights of poor people in the criminal justice and
corrections systems of the South through litigation, education, advocacy, and community involvement.
It needs your financial support to carry on its work.
The Center is funded by individuals,
law firms, foundations, and religious groups. It has
never received government funds. The Center carries out this work
with a staff of nine attorneys, all paid no more than $40,000 a year, an
associate director, a public policy director, ten paralegals and investigators, an office manager,
and two administrative assistants. The Center's total annual budget is
about $1.7 million. The Center's modest salaries and other cost-saving measures ensure that all of its
funds are stretched as far as possible to serve those in need of its assistance.
The Center needs your help to provide representation to the condemned and imprisoned,
to publish articles and reports which add a voice of reason to the national crime debate,
and to raise awareness about the injustices that are occurring as a result of the current
policies.
