The Southern Center for Human Rights is pleased to announce that the Anti-Defamation League, one of the country’s oldest and most respected civil and human rights organizations, has recognized one of our Death Penalty lawyers, Lauren Sudeall Lucas, at its annual jurisprudence awards.

The ADL Stuart Eizenstat Young Lawyer Award is presented to an attorney practicing in Metro Atlanta who has gone above and beyond their legal practice in furtherance of ADL’s steadfast mission to seek justice and fair treatment for all citizens alike.  Lauren represents indigent capital clients in state post-conviction and habeas proceedings. She spoke of the role that socio-economic status and race plays in the denial of equal access to representation in the courts and to fair treatment for all.

Lauren said that receiving the ADL Young Lawyer Award “is a reminder that our lives do not belong to us alone.” She noted that, “the victories for those of us doing this work are hard-earned and often elusive.  But the amazing thing about our work is that there are small victories to be won every day.  We can make a difference in our clients’ lives just by virtue of the relationships we forge, regardless of the ultimate outcome in their cases.”
