Richard Shapiro

Rich served as the second director of SCHR from 1978-1982, based in New Orleans. Rich was described as the "lawyer of last resort" for many people on death row in the South in the late 1970s and the early 1980s. As director, Rich prevented numerous executions as he directed legal appeals for those sentenced to death. Rich was honored by the ACLU of Louisiana with the Benjamin E. Smith Civil Liberties Award in 1982.
