JOB ANNOUNCEMENT – August 2021
The Southern Center for Human Rights (SCHR) seeks someone to fill a new full-time position, the Intake Coordinator, to coordinate our intake program. Our intake program is an essential piece of our impact litigation unit. SCHR receives up to 100 requests for assistance every week, through calls, letters, and emails. SCHR is committed to upholding the dignity of every person who contacts us by responding in a thoughtful and timely manner. The role of the Intake Coordinator is to ensure SCHR’s intake program is running smoothly, to provide coordination and resources to all staff conducting intake, and to seek opportunities for the information collected and connections made through the intake program to support the rest of SCHR’s work.
SCHR is working for equality, dignity, and justice for people impacted by the criminal legal system in the Deep South. SCHR fights for a world free from mass incarceration, the death penalty, the criminalization of poverty, and racial injustice.
Over our forty-five-year history, SCHR has forced county, state, and federal governments to make significant improvements in prisons and jails to reduce overcrowding, provide adequate medical and mental health care, and abate violence and abuse. We have argued and won five death penalty cases at the US Supreme Court, four of which challenged profound race discrimination in capital trials. Our combined litigation and policy advocacy helped bring about the creation of a statewide public defender system in Georgia. For more information about SCHR, see our website at www.schr.org.
The Intake Coordinator Position
SCHR’s Intake Program was created to respond to all requests for assistance we receive from individuals impacted by the criminal legal system. SCHR receives up to 100 requests for assistance every week, through calls, letters, and emails. In order to respond to these requests, SCHR divides responsibility among its staff members. Most requests are handled by one or two-year-long fellows (“Intake Specialists”). SCHR staff are also in an “on-call” rotation for responding to the remainder of the requests. SCHR has also developed an internal, online database to monitor the requests we receive.
The Intake Coordinator is responsible for the logistics and coordination of the intake program. This includes:
- Monitoring the volume of intake and managing the distribution to various staff members;
- Managing the online database and an in-office mail filing system, and updating and developing general information materials for distribution;
- Alongside a supervising attorney, supervising and training Intake Specialists;
- Due to the difficult and demanding nature of intake work, these fellows require attentive emotional support throughout the year in addition to guidance on how to respond to requests for assistance.
- Offer training, resources, and logistics support to other SCHR staff who are on intake rotation;
- Remain involved in the “on-call” rotation, while being responsible for responding to calls, emails, and letters.
As a matter of course, the Intake Coordinator must stay up-to-date on the work and cases of the rest of the office and will be encouraged to think creatively about how to better integrate the intake program into the work of the organization at large.
Strong candidates will have experience working in collaboration with others, experience in handling multi-faceted logistics and problem solving, and a commitment to our mission. This position requires someone who can be self-directed and work independently, and someone who is proactive in solving problems and brainstorming and implementing creative solutions.
Additionally, experience using data collection tools and Excel is a plus. Finally, a strong candidate will demonstrate engagement in social justice community, familiarity with issues in the criminal legal system, a passion for SCHR’s work, and a commitment to antiracism.
Commitment and Compensation
SCHR seeks a commitment of at least three years. Start date is negotiable. Salary is commensurate with experience, within SCHR’s public interest salary range of $35,000-$40,000. SCHR offers an excellent, 100% premium paid benefit package including medical, dental, vision care, and life insurance. Additional benefits include modest stipends for transportation and wellness, access to a flexible spending account, and childcare assistance (if eligible).
SCHR’s office, located in downtown Atlanta, remains closed for business at this time due to COVID-19. We hope to reopen in early fall of 2021. All staff members are working remotely, though some fieldwork is currently being conducted by staff members who opt-in to participate. SCHR provides PPE for employees and has a mandatory safety protocol.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Those who are interested are encouraged to apply immediately. NO PHONE CALLS PLEASE. Email [email protected] with the following:
- Subject line of the e-mail: “Intake Coordinator position _ [First Name Last Name, Pronouns)”;
- Letter of Interest;
- Contact information for three references.
