SCHR’s Senior Counsel Confirmed to Federal Bench
Today, we could not be prouder to announce that our colleague and friend Sarah Elisabeth Geraghty has been confirmed to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia!
Sarah possesses a deep, unshakable dedication to working for equality, dignity, and justice for people impacted by the criminal legal system. She has spent the majority of the last 20 years at the Southern Center for Human Rights, representing the rights of those ensnared by the system.
Sarah has long been sounding the alarm on the criminalization of poverty and the inhumane, torturous conditions inside prisons and jails in the Deep South. Her zealous litigation has shined a light on the perverse policy of using our courts to generate money, elevating the issue to the national level. From ensuring the end of predatory private probation companies, ending room and board fees at jails, and successfully challenging cash bail systems, Sarah’s groundbreaking advocacy has had — and continues to have — deep impact.
“This is a historic moment for the Southern Center for Human Rights, as we all cheer for and celebrate our colleague and friend, Sarah Elisabeth Geraghty,” said Terrica Redfield Ganzy, SCHR’s Executive Director. “Sarah’s elevation to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia is nothing less than a victory for justice. Her unimpeachable character and integrity, sheer brilliance, and enduring compassion are traits that we hope for in all jurists, and we look forward to watching her continue to advance justice, this time from the federal bench.”
Congratulations, Sarah!
