Southern Center for Human Rights Statement Regarding Ongoing Prosecution of Atlanta Public School Educators
Press Contact: Tiffany Roberts, [email protected] (SCHR) & [email protected] (COC)
Over the past 11 years, we have watched the Fulton County District Attorney’s relentless pursuit of incarceration for Atlanta Public Schools educators. This prosecution was the only one of its kind and demonstrates our country’s debilitating dependence on the criminal legal system to solve social problems.
As the remaining co-defendants prepare for their motions for new trial, the Southern Center for Human Rights stands with every community member calling on District Attorney Fani Willis and the Court to extend mercy to these Atlantans, who have worked to move on with their lives. Requiring incarceration in Georgia prisons, which fail to afford the most basic human rights to incarcerated people, serves no one. SCHR attorneys have secured freedom through resentencing for many incarcerated people across the Southeast and know firsthand that public safety is best served by them—and these educators—remaining at home with their families.
