Justice for Danyel Smith

Danyel Smith was blamed for the death of his infant son in 2002, based on a forensic diagnosis of “shaken baby syndrome,” junk science now entirely discredited and abandoned by the medical community. Current science now shows his death resulted from injuries sustained during his complicated premature birth and subsequent seizures. A Gwinnett County judge refused to hear Mr. Smith’s unrebutted evidence of innocence.

Mr. Smith’s SCHR attorneys have appealed to the Georgia Supreme Court, asking them to hear his case. Legal and medical experts have filed two of their own amicus briefs in support of a new trial, one from the Innocence Network and several state Innocence Projects as well as the Center for Integrity in Forensic Science, the Academy for Justice, and the Forensic Justice Project, and more, and one on behalf of six doctors specializing in pediatric neurosurgery, ophthalmology, radiology, and child abuse.
